Parenting Forums

It comes as no surprise to parents and caregivers of 10 to 16 year olds that they need to apply “A New Kind of Parenting”. That was the name of a free forum held on February 8, 2011. The presenters discussed how brain growth and development during this stage affects behavior and provided practical advice on how parents can adjust their parenting styles to help their children cope with stress and emotions

Dr. Jean Clinton, featured speaker at the forum, has been working with children of all ages and their families for over 25 years in Hamilton and Toronto. Known for using common sense and plain language, she stressed that parents can learn new ways to nurture and maintain positive, supportive relationships with their children as they become teenagers.

“It’s important to remember that children are still developing during this period and that their brains are still ‘under construction’,” said Dr. Clinton. “Building and maintaining strong and positive relationships helps that construction. Parents need to look at their children as being at promise or potential, rather than at risk. It’s a new kind of parenting.”

As they try and cope with their children’s behavior, parents can feel embarrassed, overwhelmed and at a loss as to where to go for help. Dr. Clinton answered participants’ questions and provided an information package.
