There is now a powerful body of research from
various fields which shows that early child development (prenatal to
6 years of age) affects health, well-being and competence throughout
life. Research in neuroscience, for example, has shown that a
child's earliest experiences shape the physical development of the
brain and the child's capacity for further development.
During the first six years of life,
environmental influences (e.g. parenting style, access to quality
child care, economic security) have a huge impact on the child's
level of developmental readiness as he/she enters school. Children
who have achieved their developmental milestones before starting
school are better able to cope with, and take advantage of, all the
experiences a school environment has to offer.
